Olena žila v Brně už tři roky a pracovala jako administrativní pracovnice v malé cestovní kanceláři. Olena had already lived in Brno for three years and worked as an administrative assistant at a small travel agency. One day, she found a job offer online at a Czech company that manufactured eco-friendly packaging. Firma hledala člověka do zákaznického oddělení, který by uměl komunikovat s klienty, připravovat objednávky a pracovat s počítačem. The company was looking for someone to join the customer service department who could communicate with clients, prepare orders, and work with a computer. Olena thought it could be a good opportunity because she had similar experience from her previous job. Poslala životopis a krátký motivační dopis, ale potom několik dní nervózně kontrolovala svůj e-mail. She sent her CV and a short cover letter, but then nervously checked her email for several days.
A week later, a human resources officer called her and invited her to a job interview. Olena was happy, but at the same time she began to worry because the interview was going to take place in Czech. Her Czech was good, but she still spoke with a Ukrainian accent and sometimes had trouble finding the right word. Kdyby mohla mluvit anglicky, cítila by se mnohem jistěji. If she could speak English, she would feel much more confident. However, she decided not to give up and began preparing carefully for the meeting.
Přečetla si znovu nabídku práce a podtrhla si důležité informace. She read through the job offer again and underlined the important information. Napsala si několik vět o svých zkušenostech, vzdělání a důvodech, proč chce ve firmě pracovat. She wrote down several sentences about her experience, education, and reasons for wanting to work at the company. She also prepared answers to common questions, such as what her strengths and weaknesses were. Večer si celý pohovor nacvičila před zrcadlem a potom ještě požádala kamarádku Janu, aby jí dávala otázky. That evening, she rehearsed the entire interview in front of a mirror and then asked her friend Jana to ask her questions as well. Jana asked strict questions, but thanks to that, Olena found out what she needed to pay attention to.
V den pohovoru vstala brzy, vybrala si jednoduché tmavé oblečení a zkontrolovala, jestli má s sebou životopis. On the day of the interview, she got up early, chose simple dark clothes, and checked that she had her CV with her. Do firmy přišla o dvacet minut dříve, protože nechtěla mít zpoždění. She arrived at the company twenty minutes early because she did not want to be late. In the waiting room, she sat on a chair, held her bag on her lap, and nervously looked at the clock. The receptionist offered her some water and said that the human resources officer would be there shortly. Olena took several deep breaths and repeated to herself that she did not have to speak perfectly.
After a few minutes, a friendly-looking woman named Petra appeared and introduced herself as the human resources officer. Podala Oleně ruku a pozvala ji do malé zasedací místnosti. She shook Olena’s hand and invited her into a small meeting room. At the beginning, Petra asked Olena how she had got into administrative work. Olena explained that at her previous company she had communicated with clients, entered orders, and also dealt with complaints. When she could not remember one word, she paused for a moment, but Petra waited patiently.
Potom přišly otázky na její silné stránky. Then came questions about her strengths. Olena odpověděla, že je pečlivá, spolehlivá a umí zachovat klid, když má najednou několik úkolů. Olena replied that she was thorough and reliable and could keep calm when she had several tasks at once. Jako slabou stránku uvedla, že někdy kontroluje svou práci příliš často, protože nechce udělat chybu. As a weakness, she mentioned that she sometimes checked her work too often because she did not want to make a mistake. However, she added that she was learning to plan her time better and wrote down the most important tasks every day. Petra also asked why Olena wanted to work at this particular company.
Olena said that she was interested in eco-friendly products and wanted to work for a company that cared about the future. She admitted that she was a little afraid to speak Czech with an accent, but at the same time she tried to improve every day. Petra smiled and said that people from several countries worked at the company. Podle ní není přízvuk problém, pokud si zaměstnanec rozumí s kolegy a zákazníky. In her opinion, an accent was not a problem as long as an employee could understand and be understood by colleagues and customers. Olena se díky tomu uvolnila a zbytek rozhovoru už proběhl mnohem přirozeněji. This helped Olena relax, and the rest of the interview went much more naturally.
At the end, Olena was given the opportunity to ask something herself. She did not want simply to say thank you and leave, so she asked how large the team was and how its members communicated with one another. Then she asked what a typical working day looked like and how long the probationary period would be. Petra jí vysvětlila, že v týmu pracuje šest lidí a že zkušební doba trvá tři měsíce. Petra explained that six people worked on the team and that the probationary period lasted three months. She also said that during the first few weeks, Olena would have a colleague who would show her everything.
After the interview, Olena walked out in front of the building and felt that she had taken an important step. She did not know whether she would get the job, but she was proud of herself because she had spoken Czech even though she was nervous. On her way home, she realized that if she had not applied for the interview, she would never have found out how it might have turned out. The following week, she tried not to think about the result, but every time her phone rang, she checked her email.
Exactly a week later, she received a message from Petra. V e-mailu stálo, že firma ocenila její zkušenosti, přístup i aktivní češtinu a nabízí jí místo v zákaznickém oddělení. The email said that the company appreciated her experience, attitude, and active use of Czech and was offering her a position in the customer service department. Olena si zprávu přečetla dvakrát, protože tomu nejdřív nemohla uvěřit. Olena read the message twice because at first she could not believe it. Then she called Jana and happily told her that she would start her new job the following month. She knew that many new tasks awaited her, but this time she was not afraid because she already knew that she could ask questions, learn, and speak even with an accent.
