V pátek odpoledne se česká města pomalu vyprázdní. On Friday afternoon, Czech cities slowly empty out. Na silnicích ven z Prahy stojí dlouhé kolony aut. Long queues of cars form on the roads leading out of Prague. V autech jsou nákupy, nářadí, děti a hlavně psi. In the cars there are groceries, tools, children and, above all, dogs. Statisíce Čechů odjíždějí na víkend na chatu nebo na chalupu. Hundreds of thousands of Czechs leave for the weekend to their chata or chalupa. Pro cizince je to zvláštní zvyk, pro Čechy naprostá samozřejmost. For a foreigner it is a strange habit; for Czechs it is completely self-evident. Kdybyste chtěli pochopit, jak Češi tráví volný čas, museli byste pochopit právě tohle. If you wanted to understand how Czechs spend their free time, this is exactly what you would have to understand.
Čeština rozlišuje dvě slova, která jiné jazyky často spojují do jednoho. Czech distinguishes two words that other languages often merge into one. Chata je malý dům, který lidé postavili přímo kvůli rekreaci. A chata is a small house built specifically for recreation. Bývá dřevěná, stojí v lese nebo u vody a velký komfort většinou nenabízí. It is usually wooden, stands in a forest or by the water, and rarely offers much comfort. Chalupa je naopak starý vesnický dům, ve kterém dřív někdo bydlel a hospodařil. A chalupa, by contrast, is an old village house where someone once lived and farmed. Rodina ho koupila, postupně opravila a jezdí do něj na víkendy i na dovolenou. A family bought it, gradually repaired it, and goes there for weekends and holidays. Rozdíl je tedy hlavně v původu domu, ne v jeho velikosti. The difference is therefore mainly in the origin of the house, not in its size.
Zvyk trávit víkend za městem je starý skoro sto let. The habit of spending the weekend out of town is almost a hundred years old. Po první světové válce se mezi mladými lidmi rozšířilo trampské hnutí. After the First World War, the tramping movement spread among young people. Trampové četli knihy Jacka Londona, obdivovali americký Západ a jezdili spát do údolí řek. The tramps read Jack London, admired the American West, and went to sleep out in river valleys. Stavěli si jednoduché sruby, zpívali u ohně a říkali si jmény podle hrdinů z knih. They built simple log cabins, sang around the fire, and called each other by names taken from books. Z těchto táborů postupně vyrostly první chatové osady. Out of these camps the first cottage settlements gradually grew.
Skutečný boom ale přišel až v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech. The real boom, however, came only in the 1970s and 1980s. Lidé tehdy nemohli svobodně cestovat na Západ a veřejný život kontroloval režim. People could not travel freely to the West back then, and public life was controlled by the regime. Chata se stala místem, kde člověk dělal, co chtěl, a mluvil, s kým chtěl. The cottage became a place where a person did what they wanted and talked to whom they wanted. O politice se u ohně mluvilo mnohem otevřeněji než v práci. Politics was discussed around the fire far more openly than at work. Rodiny tam trávily celé léto a dnešní padesátníci na ta prázdninová léta vzpomínají dodnes. Families spent whole summers there, and today's fifty-somethings still remember those holidays. Statistiky mluví o stovkách tisíc chat a chalup, takže Česko v tomhle srovnání patří ke světové špičce. Statistics speak of hundreds of thousands of cottages, so in this respect Czechia ranks among the world leaders.
Chata ovšem neznamená nicnedělání, spíš naopak. A cottage does not mean doing nothing, though — rather the opposite. Lidé sekají trávu, natírají plot, opravují střechu a chystají dřevo na zimu. People mow the grass, paint the fence, repair the roof and prepare firewood for winter. Na zahradě roste ovoce a zelenina, a tak se v srpnu doma zavařuje. Fruit and vegetables grow in the garden, so in August everything gets preserved at home. Večer se griluje a u ohně se sedí dlouho do noci. In the evening there is a barbecue, and people sit by the fire late into the night. Sousedé se znají celá desetiletí a půjčují si nářadí i recepty. Neighbours have known each other for decades and lend each other tools and recipes alike. Kdo si myslí, že si na chalupě odpočine, obvykle se v neděli vrací unavenější než v pátek. Anyone who thinks they will rest at the cottage usually comes back on Sunday more tired than on Friday.
K chalupě patří také houby. Mushrooms are part of the cottage package too. Sbírání hub je v Česku skoro národní sport. Mushroom picking is almost a national sport in Czechia. Po vydatném dešti vstávají houbaři brzy ráno, aby byli v lese první. After heavy rain, mushroom pickers get up early to be the first ones in the forest. Každý má své tajné místo, které neprozradí ani vlastní rodině. Everyone has a secret spot they will not reveal even to their own family. Doma se pak houby suší, zavařují nebo se z nich udělá smaženice. At home the mushrooms are then dried, preserved, or turned into scrambled eggs with mushrooms. Kdo houbám nerozumí, měl by se raději zeptat souseda, protože některé houby jsou jedovaté. Anyone who does not know mushrooms should rather ask a neighbour, because some of them are poisonous.
V posledních letech se chataření mění. In recent years, cottage life has been changing. Mladší lidé chtějí dům, do kterého se dá jezdit celý rok, ne jen v létě. Younger people want a house they can use all year round, not only in summer. Staré chalupy se proto zateplují a připojují k internetu, aby se z nich dalo pracovat na dálku. Old cottages are therefore being insulated and connected to the internet so that people can work remotely from them. Ceny chalup v hezkých vesnicích v posledních letech výrazně vzrostly. Prices of cottages in attractive villages have risen sharply in recent years. Někteří majitelé své chalupy pronajímají turistům, když je sami nepotřebují. Some owners rent their cottages out to tourists when they do not need them themselves.
Kdybyste dostali pozvání na chalupu, rozhodně neodmítejte. If you ever get an invitation to a cottage, definitely do not refuse. Luxus nečekejte: voda bývá studená a záchod někdy stojí na zahradě. Do not expect luxury: the water tends to be cold and the toilet sometimes stands in the garden. Zato dostanete maso z grilu, domácí slivovici a rozhovor, který skončí až po půlnoci. In return you will get meat off the grill, homemade plum brandy, and a conversation that ends only after midnight. A možná pochopíte, proč Čech celý týden mluví o tom, že v pátek jede na chalupu. And perhaps you will understand why a Czech spends the whole week talking about going to the cottage on Friday.
